Antelope & Castle 230-5 v Portsmouth II 233-8 |
| Portsmouth II won by 2 wickets For the second week running
Antelope & Castle went to the very last ball of the game, this time ending up the
losers of a tight and highly thrilling game away at Drayton Park. Antelope won the toss
and elected to bat on what looked a very good and flat pitch but hit early trouble as Dave
Agha was out in the third over without scoring. Rob Matthews (50) and Steve Teepa (22)
then batted solidly to take the score along to 76-2 at the half way stage. Steve Wallis
(76*) started slowly before some aggressive hitting allowed Antelope to push the run rate
along with Steve Lockyer (28) adding some useful runs as they added 82 runs in 10 overs.
Richard Keep (6) and Allan Hurst (9*) also added some quick runs as Antelope finished on
230 having put on 90 runs in the last 10 overs. Antelope knew that there was still a long way to go on what was a good batting track and Portsmouth got off to a flying start as Dew and Pitts added 65 in the first 12 overs before Allan Hurst had Dew caught for a rapid 43. Antelope then brought on Dave Agha to bowl some spin as the flat track offered little assistance to the Antelope seam attack. Agha bowled well and contained the batsmen but Portsmouth progressed steadily to 100-1 after 24 overs leaving them handily placed to push on for victory. Antelope kept to their task and with a couple of run outs from excellent fielding reduced Portsmouth to 147-6 swinging the game back in Antelope's favour. Portsmouth were not going to give in easily though and Sewell (60*) came in and with some big hitting pushed the score on to 196-7 leaving Portsmouth needing 35 off the last 5 overs. Portsmouth continued to pick up the boundaries and with some good running between the wickets left themselves needing just 5 runs from the last over. Steve Lockyer was once again left to bowl the final over and with the first ball of the over induced Sewell to sky one to midwicket. Unfortunately the fielder could not hold on to what would have proven a match winning catch (Portsmouth's eleventh man was not present to bat) and as the batsmen pinched a few quick singles left themselves just one run to win from the final ball. As the field closed in Marsden hit the ball through the field for four to win the game for Portsmouth and leave the Antelope players thinking about what might have been. Antelope entertain Trojans this week who will have Kissinger Mclean (brother of Hampshire's Nixon in their side. The match starts at 1.30pm at Doncaster Farm in Eastleigh. |
