A Warm Welcome to Craig

Craig will be joining us for the 1998 season. He plays his cricket in Moe - a small city east of Melbourne, Australia.

Craig is 26 years old and is primarily a batsman. He tells us, "Moe have had a good season", whilst we've been shivering, "finishing top of their league" - which qualifies them for the sudden death play-offs. "We have made the final for the last 5 years but have yet to win it" - lets hope Craig's side have better luck this year.

Craig also tells us about the local climate in the Latrobe Valley area, "We've had lots of days above 35°C this year and one 42°C which nearly killed me". I'm sure that after a typical English summer he'll be longing to get back to Australia!

Please join us in welcoming Craig and his wife to England. They will be staying with John Beesley, but as they've never met John that shouldn't put them off coming!

Congratulations 1

Richard Keep & Tash Ramsey finally tied the knot on Saturday 28th March 1998. Please join us in wishing them every happiness for the future. Like a true cricketer Dickie organised the wedding so it wouldn't interfere with the season - let that be a lesson to anybody else considering getting hitched!

The Social Scene...

A very successful quiz night was held at the Inn on the Green on March 14th 1998. Thanks to Wendy's friends who brought along their quiz and to the social committee for organising the event at short notice.

For the record the "Follow on" team consisting of Dave, Tre, Nick, Jackie, Emma and Richard won the quiz. Steve Lockyer won the huge Easter egg and Gary Green walked off with the bottle of port - meaning he won it, not stole it!

The "lucky" winner of the awesome fondue set was Dave Howes. The next date for your diary is Sunday 5th April when, straight after the last net session at Thornden, there will be a car based treasure hunt.

Anybody interested should meet at The King Rufus, Chandlers Ford, between 1:00 - 2:00pm.The cost will be £2/head and all money will be put towards prizes. If you want instructions on how to get to The King Rufus email Andy.

Winchester Indoor League

Our first season in division 2 got off to a shaky start when Nick showed his organisational flair by failing to get enough players together, and we forfeited the game. D'oh!

The remaining 8 games went much better - W4, L4, leaving us mid-table in our first year in the division - a good performance all round. A good all round team performance, with Terry Coombes 3-8 and Beezers frequent retirements some individual highlights.

Congratulations 2

Phil Ratcliffe is now a nationally qualified umpire - an outstanding achievement. He has had to pass numerous exams, including an oral exam lasting the best part of 2 hours!

Phil is now eligible, after standing at a couple of Southern League & Hampshire 2 matches, to officiate in 3 day minor county games - who knows, maybe in a few years time we'll see Phil at Lords for a test match.....
