Eastleigh Cricket Club
April 2000 Newsletter

updated 4th April 2000

Welcome to a new Era

As many of you will already know, we as a club have begun the new century with a bang. Not only do we almost own a ground, have a colt's section but we also have a new name, below is the press release that announced that momentous moment.

New Eastleigh Cricket Club

Residents in Eastleigh and the surrounding areas are to benefit from the creation of Eastleigh Cricket Club. The club previously called Antelope & Castle Cricket Club, comprised two of the regions longest established clubs and has been playing in the Eastleigh area for the last ten years

The club voted to rename itself Eastleigh Cc at it's AGM at the end of last year to enable the club to gain greater identity in the area (it has the highest league placed side in the Borough of Eastleigh) and help in the attraction of new players (especially in the junior section).

Eastleigh CC will run three Saturday sides in Hampshire Premier League Bronze, East Division 1 and Hampshire Combination League Central Division. The club also has an excellent ladies side (twice winners of The Hampshire Ladies League) and also midweek Evening League side and a Sunday side plating friendly cricket (no such thing Ed.) The club also started colts cricket last season, and will be looking to play matches at U9, U11 & U13 levels.

The club is in discussion with Eastleigh Borough Council to gain a lease on their home ground at Doncaster Farm in order to improve both pitch and facilities at the ground. The pitch will still be available for hire by other users. The club will also be looking to work with Eastleigh Cricket Assc. to improve the opportunities for people in the area to play cricket at the level that best suits their abilities and ambitions.

Both the Senior and Junior sections of the club are currently running coaching course and general practice nets. The club is interested in hearing from players (whatever their ability or experience). We would also like to hear from anyone interested in helping in any other positions within the club structure (e.g. umpires, scorers, ground keepers etc).

Overseas Players

We have two overseas players again this year, Bradley Edwards a New Zealander, who plays in the league above Steve Teepa, an opening batsman, (anyone who can offer accommodation for Bradley please contact Steve Lockyer) and Nick Webb a South African middle order batsman.

Quiz Night

Following the success of last years quiz night another is planned at The Inn on the Green for Fri 28th April at 7.30 p.m. max 6 per team at £3.00 (no food) a head Contact John Beesley if attending. Bring a raffle prize with you please.

Club Day

We will be holding a "Club Day" on the 15thApril. This day will be at the ground and will be used to do any maintenance that is required and any other jobs that have cropped up. Please Let Mike O'Brien Jnr Know you are coming.

Bonus Ball

After its success last year we will be running it again. The idea is you buy a number between 1 and 49 for £1. If that number is drawn as the Bonus Ball on the Wed Draw of the National Lottery you win £25. You can buy a ball for any number of weeks or just pick a lucky dip number as and when you feel like it. Speak to Danny O'Brien for more details.

Indoor Leagues

At Winchester the side won Div 3 and were promoted to Div2 (P 8 W 6 L 2) - well done everybody involved.

At Eastleigh the A side was promoted to Div 1 and both the A & B sides made it into the semis of the cup. A good effort all round.

Potential Sponsors

Anybody that knows of any potential sponsors and can let Andy Price have contact details would be appreciated as we have put together a pack to send out, and all we are missing is names and addresses.
