| HGV Awareness Training | ||||||||||
| HGV's and other large vehicles pose a particular hazard on the road. Because of their size, it can be difficult for drivers of smaller vehicles to read the road ahead, and their heavy weight makes it very difficult for them to stop quickly in an emergency - it is also very time-consuming, and expensive in terms of fuel consumption, for HGV drivers to accelerate from standstill, so they do their best to maintain momentum. This is an area where other road users are often ignorant, and why they often fail to predict what an HGV is likely to do. The other issue is the manoeuvrability of HGV's, especially in tight turns or when reversing. |
Interesting Fact In 2001 there were 120 drivers / occupants of goods vehicles killed in road crashes in the UK - if other road users killed in these collisions were included then this figure would be much higher |

| Our course module raises the awareness of these issues and gives practical examples of what HGV's are likely to do in a variety of everyday situations. This will allow employees to predict what these vehicle are likely to do, and what to look for, so that they have more time to prepare / react when they are sharing the road with these vehicles. | ||||||||||
| This training course may be appropriate if your crash database shows that you have a lot of collisions that involve HGV's in some way, or the risk assessment shows that employees are spending a long time on roads heavily populated with HGV's. | ||||||||||
